a glass darkly

An interesting essay by SF writer Adam Roberts on the idea (famously propounded by Delaney) that science fiction is grounded in metaphor rather than mimesis. I'm still reading it, so I won't attempt to sum it up for you.

Why is a raven like a writing desk? Because Poe wrote on both.

'We can talk of SF as a metaphoric language with an understanding that the focus of the text is on the poetic surplus rather than the semantic content of the metaphor.' In other words the SF (or fantastic) metaphor expands rather than constricts the meaning of the terms used.
