I thought my language-loving friends may be interested in this article from languagehat, on the Jesuit linguist who was employed to write the Latin and Aramaic dialogue for Mel's film. In particular that he based the Latin dialogue of the soldiers on obscene graffiti, and put in deliberate grammatical errors at various points.

Some debate in the comments on correct pronounciation. Apparently in the film the latin speakers pronounce the soft 'c' (thus 'ecce' pronounced something like 'essay' I think) whereas I was taught the hard 'k' sound ('ekkay').
