|03:59 pm - You are surrounded by Armed Bastards|
A meme I saw at huskyscotsman's journal 'Your ten favourite fictional characters - and why'. I have been putting together my own list off and on since I read it, but it's hard to zoom in on just ten, so I have decided to limit myself to my all time top ten favourite bad-asses. Sorry these are predominantly men.
He had scant regard
for the dragon as a threat, no dread at all
of its courage or strength, for he endured
much in the past, through perils and ordeals
of every sort, who had purged
Hrothgar's hall, triumphed in Heorot
and beaten Grendel.
"That sound", said Gawain, "Marks my end;
He's sharpening his axe to strike me down.
God's will be done.
It's out of my hands now.
I'm going to die,
But Christ, I won't back down."
Let me have war, say I
It exceeds peace as far as day does night
It's spritely, waking, audible, and full of vent.
Peace is very apoplexy, lethargy
Mulled, deaf, sleepy, insensible
A getter of more bastard children
Than war's a destroyer of men.
4: The Continental Op (Red Harvest)
This damned burg's getting me. If I don't get away soon I'll be going blood-simple like the natives
5: Ripley (A l i e n)
Final report of the commercial starship Nostromo, third officer reporting. The other members of the crew, Kane, Lambert, Parker, Brett, Ash and Captain Dallas, are dead. Cargo and ship destroyed. I should reach the frontier in about six weeks. With a little luck, the network will pick me up. This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off.
6: Walter White (Breaking Bad)
Okay Mr White. You need to cut out all your loser cry-baby crap RIGHT NOW and think of something SCIENTIFIC. Come on! Man, you're smart. You made poison out of beans, yo. Look, we got, we got an entire lab right here. Alright? How about you pick some of these chemicals and mix up some rocket fuel? Or make some kind of robot.
7: Satan (Paradise Lost)
High on a throne of royal state, which far
Outshone the wealth of Ormus and of Ind,
Or where the gorgeous East with richest hand
Showers on her kings barbaric pearl and gold,
Satan exalted sat, by merit raised
To that bad eminence; and from despair
Thus high uplifted beyond hope, aspires
Beyond thus high, insatiate to pursue
Vain war with heav'n.
8: The Ancient Mariner
Alone, alone, all, all alone,
Alone on a wide wide sea!
And never a saint took pity on
My soul in agony.
The many men, so beautiful!
And they all dead did lie;
And a thousand thousand slimy things
Lived on; and so did I.
9: Jayne Cobb (ETA from Firefly)
Time for some thrillin' heroics.
10: Al Swearengen (Deadwood)
Now, here's my counter offer to your counter offer - go fuck yourself
11: Gene Hunt
It's tradition when a woman joins the Met, skirt up, stamp your bum with the date and down the pub.
12: John McLean (Die Hard)
You motherfucker, I'm gonna kill you! I'm gonna fuckin' cook you, and I'm gonna fucking eat you
13: Omar Little (The Wire)
'Mr. Little, how does a man rob drug dealers for eight or nine years and live to tell about it?'
'Day at a time I guess'
(also, sorry there are now 13)
Thanks :-) I am thinking about what they all have in common. Refusal to concede defeat I think.
Also, I was just interpreting it as "ten of your favourite". Otherwise, yeah, you can easily spend forever agonising over these things.
Yes, that makes more sense, I just couldn't stop adding to it
Jayne is Jayne Cobb, right? From Firefly?
Yep. Perhaps not quite on the intellectual level of the others.
Yes, but there was something glorious in his idiocy. I have a soft spot for the heroically stupid; not so much for the stupidly heroic.
Heartily approve of the rest of your list, by the way.
