12:27 pm - Getting to paytime
Look at charts 2 and 3 here. This is the whole point of Conservatism - everything else is window dressing. The Clause 28 stuff, replaced by new social attitudes, all these are just costumes which are assumed and shed as it suits exigency. Like in America - do educated senior Republicans really disbelieve in evolution - of course not. It's all about getting to pay time.

I just commented on coalescent's blog. There are much worse things than losing an election. Just like there are worse things in a marriage than a divorce.

But lest it seem that I am only all 'boo hoo what about the poor people' (because people might think that's the necessary pain - the sadness they feel). I also say that this is bad, bad economics. It's like medicine based on the theory of the humours - if you survived the blood letting it was no thanks to the doctor.

In a sense this is people believing their own propaganda. They invent a false narrative, and they think they can control it, they think they can propagate it but be outside of it, but eventually it will destroy them.

I was actually quite pleased to see the IFS coming out with something that was critical of the supposed 'fairness' of the budget. They're respected and because of that it felt like their commentary was being taken seriously.

Yes, there has been a lot published that I haven't linked to, because although I agree with it, I don't think it is necessarily compelling.

If that chart is accurate, it's not just about the poor people (although that's the point that stands out). Everybody is slightly worse off except the final "richest" column, who are significantly better off. W, as they say, TF.

I think it is interesting to read the comments that accompanied the article in the Guardian - people in all seriousness saying 'make the poor pay. It's Darwinian'. As if evolution operated like that, and as if that was a way for a society to survive.

I may start feeling guilty about voting Lib Dem. Sigh. I actually liked that they explicitly advocated the redistribution of wealth in their manifesto, even if they're somewhat right-wing economically in many ways. Totally sucks if the Tories make them throw all that away.

immortalradical felt that their numbers didn't add up, and concluded that they weren't serious about redistribution, but I liked to think their intentions were still good. Nobody's numbers added up before the election, after all.
