Doctor Who was good this week. I only drive-by post to say that the scene with the cyberman was a homage to this scene from The Thing. Because it's a kids' show they had to remove the one line of dialogue, which is my favourite from any SF film: 'You have got to be fucking kidding'.

You know, the more I think about it, this line would work in most SF films. The Terminator emerges from the flames, flesh burnt off; the alien larva bursts from Caine's chest and shoots off into the ship's interior; Priss does a back-flip and catches Deckard's head between her android thighs; Jason Nesmith realises he's not on the set of an SF show, he's in outer space. You have got to be fucking kidding. But 'you' (I assume the universe is being addressed) are not.

Okay, so I wasn't imagining that particular homage. :-)

And yes, that's a great all-purpose line for sf films.

This whole series has had a lot of references to SF books and films, sometimes quite obscure.

I saw the same reference in that scene - I love the original, too. That line manages to be both the character's words *and* what's going through the viewer's head, too, a kind of "I can't *believe* they just did that". Though I more usually express it with a loud "HA!"

I think they made it as horrible as they could while keeping it suitable for kids. In fact the whole series has been satisfyingly frightening for the kiddies.

Yes, it has, hasn't it? I think that keeping it (just about) suitable for kids is not a bad constraint to have - for us, as well as for kids.

There's been nothing quite as chilling for me this season as, say, 'The Empty Child', but there have been some wonderful episodes. (Runaway favourite being 'Vincent and the Doctor'.)
