The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet

I have just started listening on audio to The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell (the writer not the comedian). I went for a walk just now round the science park, listening to the first chapter (a forceps delivery in 18th centry Nagasaki) and I was soon weeping with emotion. Then as people come walking by I had to pretend I was examining the ducks with great interest. I have now listened to a little more and it's masterfully written.

Here is a glowing review from the Observer: 'A love story from 18th century Japan confirms David Mitchell as the most dazzling British novelist of his generation'.
