09:50 am - The man's a comedian
It's a lazy post to link to the weekly David Mitchell column in the Observer. This one is saying something which I think is true - politicians tend to work for what the bulk of people actually want, rather than what they say they want. In this case, cheap oil rather than Peace. We recoil from the result like Caliban glimpsing his face in a glass.

However, I am not linking because it's a new idea, but because of this particular comment pointed out by someone on metafilter. The comment I've linked to criticises David Mitchell, most aggressively. The opinion expressed on metafilter is that David Mitchell wrote it.

You know, I think he could be right. it's an interesting thought. The writing style is familiar, and it ends with a sly undermining joke, which is perhaps a nod to the wise.
I'm beginning to learn that I don't give a damn what you do or do not like... it's a bit bloody much to be told that what in fact we suffer from is an excess of successful democracy. The man's a comedian.

Or perhaps one of his mates or writing partners. It has that sort of pantomime, pub-argument feel about it.

Yes, that's quite plausible.

I like David Mitchell but I buy the Observer for Victoria Cohen and Barbara Ellen. :) Interesting comment thing, though. I wonder what they're up to.

Whoops, cannot spell. I meant, of course, Victoria Coren.
