04:15 pm - Mad ideas of our time
Can this be true? The rumour is that in Ridley Scott's new Robin Hood film, Robin Hood will be played by Russell Crowe, while the Sheriff of Nottingham will be played by Russell Crowe.

According to Scott, his revisionist version will be "a good old clever adjustment of characters. One becomes the other. It changes".

Deep. This has got to be a Charlie Kaufman-style satire, right? I'm a big fan of Russell Crowe but it sounds too bizarre to be true.

Or will there be some plot revisionism by which, like Batman, The Sheriff of Nottingham is Robin Hood in his spare time: 'To the Hood-Cave Robin!'

I'm not such a big fan of Russell Crowe, but I might even go and watch that. Undoing by night the injustice he does by day!

And, of course, a good reason why the Sheriff never actually catches Robin.

I'm imaginging primitive split-screen for their scenes together. There was a TV show in my youth, The Patty Duke Show, in which Duke played a Brooklyn girl and her Scottish "identical cousin" (yeah, right), so I assume the resemblance is caused by some Saxon-genation.

Of course if it was like Memento, the Sheriff could discover that he didn't KNOW he was Robin Hood.

Rubbish split-screen would be hilarious. Most of the dialogue of Adaptation also fits the bill:

Charlie Kaufman: The only idea more overused than serial killers is multiple personality. On top of that, you explore the notion that cop and criminal are really two aspects of the same person. See every cop movie ever made for other examples of this.
Donald Kaufman: Mom called it "psychologically taut"!

You've got to be taut
To be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made
Or people whose skin is a different shade
You've got to be carefully taut!

The Sheriff sold his soul to Herne the Hunter... so by night he is transformed into a forest-dwelling outlaw, in thrall to the ancient gods, whom he spends the days trying to thwart

I suppose that's the idea. I just have this awful feeling that Scott has got so fixated on Crowe that he wants him to do everything

he's got the accent for Robin Hood (or the sheriff), though he'll probably have to get a bit slimmer than what his recent role in Body of Lies

I think he genuinely could do a good job in either role, and I'd love to see it.I haven't seen body of Lies yet - not shown yet round these parts - worth a view?
