|07:31 am - Meeting lj friends in real life|
I saw a lot of lj friends this weekend - we've been meeting up irregularly for - gosh too many years for me to say. Longer than livejournal has existed certainly. Nowadays when you say 'good-bye see you next year' it isn't like saying goodbye, because you will see them online. I sometimes think of people as their lj-name, and once or twice I called someone by that cognomen.

The thing about LJ names, is that they are unique. I think there is definitely a sociology paper in the rise of the on-line name as the True Name.
I have, on more than one occasion, found myself resisting the notion that the name on all those government-issue documents is my "real" name. It seems to imply that my online name is somehow not real, but yet, there it is, above this comment :)
It worries me that I sometimes refer to my spouse tenbears
But then, it really does suit him.

It was a lovely weekend, and thank you so much for looking after us all so well.
It was a splendid time, and it was very lovely to see you - it had been a while. Thank you for having us and for all that you did to look after us. And thank you to the rest of your family for letting us pinch their home for a couple of days! :-)
Isn't it wonderful? The internet, and in particular social networking and blogging--have expanded my definition of social life beyond anything I could have imagined when I was young (with pen-pals all over the world).
Though it sounds a bit maudlin to say, I've actually given some thought to how my online friends might be notified if anything happened to me. I mean, there are swaths of wonderful, dear people in my life that I've never met--that no family member has ever met. Do you leave the passwords to your LJ accounts in your will? (*shudder*).
Sorry--down a bit of a rabbit hole there. Could be the insomnia--it's 2:11 a.m. here.
We first met in this format on May 22, 1999, in Rugby. That was easy to check because of the FA Cup final.
And thanks for everything!
I was just going to say, "a couple of months after Redemption '99", but now that you mention it, I do remember crawling under the table with the telly on it, so that I could get a photo of everyone watching the footy :)

Not everyone at that meeting was watching the footy!
No, some of us were (briefly) watching the people watching the footy!
And then returning to the other room for some very pleasant food and chat :)
Well, I was always a bit rubbish at the chat thing.

Thank you so much for an absolutely splendid weekend! I hope your family weren't too put off by us all descending on them, and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again in February - which isn't that long, after all!
Thank you for putting up with us for the weekend - much appreciated
