The Guardian site has an online resource for bloggers, with various recommendations

here is their review of livejournal: "the most community-oriented of the blogging systems" which you can compare to other options.

and the results of their UK weblog awards.

I think their categories were poorly chosen but I draw your attention to the winner and runner up for 'best written blog'

Winner: Belle Du Jour The diary of a call-girl. I found this tedious and ersatz. I believe it gives men the illusion that they are seeing into a woman's private soul, without the effort involved in achieving this in reality. A bit like prostitution in fact. Hence, could be 'genuine': whatever you understand by that.

Runner up:Call centre confidential. Diary of a call centre administrator. Like the call girl blog I found this a bit unsatisfactory. Perhaps I'm just a grumpy old sod.

and "judges' special choice (i.e. oops we forgot to include a 'best links' category which this would have won)."

LinkMachineGo. This is a blog I do read occasionally. A lot of stuff about comic books in it. Seems to have improved quite a bit lately. I'd add this to your regular reads if I were you.

At the moment I have set up this journal so that only friends can comment. I hate doing this, but I was just getting too much Russian spam.
