We stayed in Sidmouth, which is about twenty miles up the coast from Lyme Regis. The rock is Triassic, so it's older than the Jurassic rocks at Lyme. In the Triassic this area was a big desert, so the cliffs are looming soft red sandstone, which makes it all seem a bit claustrophobic. I didn't find it as magical as Lyme is, but it wasn't bad for a long weekend.
ETA - and big thanks to happytune for feeding the cats over the weekend
I hope I didn't sound too grudging about the weekend. H booked us two nights in a nice little guest house run by a sweet couple, and we relaxed and drank and ate and walked in the usual way, and it was all good.
