I saw the first episode of the new Andrew Davies 3-part Sense and Sensibility last night. It almost seemed like a shot-for-shot remake of the excellent Ang Lee film. On reflection I think that was because Eleanor, Marianne and Edward were played as virtually impersonations of Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant. But not quite as charismatic. David Morrissey made an interestingly different Colonel Brandon, while Willoughby is played as a git and/or the lead singer of Green Day. The main difference from the film was the obligatory Davies sex-scene.

I went to see I am Legend at the cinema. The premise is like a slightly watered down and Americanised 28 weeks later. By Americanised I mean religious references added throughout and a massively implausible upbeat ending. However the zombie concept is so scary that I was terrified. My heart was thumping in my chest for almost the whole two hours. Like Tom Hanks in Castaway, Will Smith carries the film; he is the only human being in most of the scenes. Like Hanks he's a bit too mainstream to be a big favourite of mine, but he does a bloody good job of this, and it's difficult to think of anyone else in the same role.

BTW It's been interesting to see the lists that people have kept through the year of books read and films seen. When people do this, do they record films they see on TV as well as at the cinema?
