09:30 pm - Against a dark background
An abyss in space has been discovered that is a billion light years wide: about 1,000 times the volume of what would be expected in typical cosmic gaps.

"In essence, this latest study gives us a very elegant demonstration of the existence of dark energy in a way which is very convincing," (Professor Carlos Frenk, the director of the Institute for Computational Cosmology at Durham University)

“Perhaps I should not hope to convey in mere words the unutterable hideousness that can dwell in absolute silence and barren immensity“ (HP Lovecraft)

I've been looking for an applicable metaphor ever since I first read that story about the unexpected cosmic gap. I think you've found it. Unutterable hideousness, indeed.

"If nature abhors a vacuum, then the recently-discovered cosmic nothingness must be an unutterable hideousness."

Love it.

It's hard to imagine light travelling for a billion years without illuminating anything

I've been thinking about this a lot recently. I don't know much about dark energy or why it's an elegant proof, but just the thought of it... a billion light years of nothing. I don't think it's hideous, though.

Not really, no, I don't either. I think HP Lovecraft was a bit overwrought. I like his stuff because he felt it intensely, at least.
