There's a thread on Crooked Timber today - what is the earliest real life 'news' event you can remember happening? I can't remember the JFK assassination (I was only 2). I can remember Churchill's funeral (I was 3) because I remember my mum saying 'He wouldn't have wanted it to be gloomy' (implication that it wasn't - the thought of a non-gloomy funeral obviously caught my childish imagination). Funny thing to have as an early memory. I can remember my mum telling me never to get into a car with strangers - reconstructing the timing, it was at the time of the trial of the Moors Murders (I was 4 and I'd just started school - I walked through Birmingham Ladywood on my own every day).
