Science fiction, fantasy, or horror?
SF by miles, though I've got some favourites in the other two.
Hardback, trade paperback, or mass market paperback?
The smaller and cheaper the better
Heinlein or Asimov?
Don't really like either.
Amazon or brick-and-mortar?
Real bookshops with coffee bars.
Barnes & Noble or Borders?
I've only been to Borders
Hitchhiker or Discworld?
Bookmark or dogear?
Please. By which I mean, both are silly.
Magazine: Asimov's Science Fiction or Fantasy & Science Fiction?
Interzone is the only one I read. And yet I dislike it. Go fig.
Alphabetize by author, by title, or random?
You're kidding, right?
Keep, throw away, or sell?
Year's Best Science Fiction series (edited by Gardner Dozois) or Year's Best SF Series (edited by David G. Hartwell)?
Dozois for some reason
Keep dustjacket or toss it?
Certainly, attempt to keep it. Ha
Read with dustjacket or remove it?
'With' I guess, for as long as it hangs around.
Short story or novel?
I'd automatically say Novel, except that I fondly remember so many short stories. I wish the community shortform would perk up a bit.
Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
I have read them both as a consequence of having children (though they are both too old for these now). I like Harry Potter. there, I've said it.
Stop reading when tired or chapter breaks?
Theoretically at a chapter break. In fact when eyes close.
"It was a dark and stormy night" or "Once upon a time"?
Dark and stormy, baby.
Buy or borrow?
I used to use the library, now I buy. I borrow quite a few books off friends, but suffer great anxiety as a result.
Buying choice: book reviews, recommendation, or browse?
A bit of all three. Probably recommendation from livejournal these days.
Lewis or Tolkien?
Tolkein. I dislike Lewis quite a lot.
Hard SF or space opera?
Space Opera, though I'm not averse to a bit of the other.
Collection (single author) or anthology (multiple authors)?
Anthology, for variety and surprise.
Hugo or Nebula?
I can't even remember which is which
Golden Age SF or New Wave SF?
ETA - change this answer to New Wave
Tidy ending or cliffhanger?
Tidy but ambiguous. that is, I like an ending which is tidy in the sense of being a culmination of the art of the writer, not just a break in the narrative, but not tidy in the sense of everything ends neatly and logically.
Morning reading, afternoon reading, or nighttime reading?
Standalone or series?
I actively avoid books that are labelled as part of a series, but in practice I have been hooked into series, and then loved them, and wished they were extended.
Urban fantasy or high fantasy?
Urban by miles. In fact I mostly hate 'high' anything. High church, high tory, high class.
New or used?
What are you implying?
Favorite book of which nobody else has heard?
I probably don't know any that none of you have heard of but I don't see this one talked about much, and I think it's brilliant.
Celestis by Paul Park
Amazon review: spellbinding, melancholic story which delves into the mind of an altered alien woman while she is returning to herself...the poetry in Park's prose is almost enough to make it worth reading by itself. The story is engaging enough to make it doubly so. .. Park explores the question of "humanness" by following the slow loss of this quality.
Top 5 favorite genre books read last year?
I can't remember :-(
Top 5 favorite genre books of all time?
