Deadwood again

H got me season 2 of Deadwood on DVD for Christmas. I watched the first 3 episodes last night. Oh boy, it's such a good program isn't it? The characterisation is so well done, and it anticipates so well the audience's understanding of what is happening. Just as you start to think 'I wonder if Cy knows about that?', there's a scene with Cy which reveals that he does know, because he is saying the exact opposite. The level of deduction required matches what I'm comfy with: other shows that are either too demanding or not demanding enough. The Shield is another that matches the pace I like.

The other aspect that I'm interested in is the vividness, the immersive quality. I suppose realism is something that dates very rapidly. I remember (this sounds ridiculous) but when I was a kid Mission Impossible and crappy shows like that seemed extremely real and vivid to me. I wonder whether one day I'll look back on Deadwood and laughingly say 'and I used to think that was gritty realism'.
