the wiki man

A wiki is a collaborative website that can be edited by any reader. Apparently it works, though I have never been involved in one.

Q: Let me get this straight: Absolutely anyone can just come along and put whatever they like on any page?

A: Yes they can! it's essential to how this wiki runs. However, we prefer that people exercise some self-restraint and put comments & edits only on the pages where they belong. If you're just in the mood to test out the Wiki software, you are encouraged to play in the WikiWikiSandbox; keep your TextFormattingRules handy.

Neal Stephenson has set up a wiki to annotate his new novel quicksilver.
I gather Neal S is rather a libertarian, and I suppose the wiki idea is at the nice end of libertarianism. Or, putting it another way, the practical end of anarchism.

I adored snow crash and the diamond age, but I couldn't finish cryptonomicon. I can imagine this project suffering from the same flaws, that sort of dense obsessive cramming of detail that clever boys get into. The edge that Pynchon fell off after gravity's rainbow.

At the moment I have set up this journal so that only friends can comment. I hate doing this, but I was just getting too much Russian spam.
