Active geography

This is a slightly simplified but interesting animated map of the various empires which have partially or wholly controlled the middle east, the Levant and the Mediterranean coast over the past 5,000 years.

Egyptian
Hittite
Judaic
Assyrian
Babylonian
Persian
Macedonian
Roman
Byzantine
Caliphate
Crusader/Saracen
Ottoman
European colonial

The map concludes that the next expansive power will be Iranian. I think this is possible, and of course more likely now that the buffer that was Iraq has been knackered. I don't think the US can maintain an empire in the Middle East, though it could probably sustain an enclave.
