Yeah, H and I were talking about 'The Shawshank Redemption' last night, because he finally got to see it on film four, and was amazed at how rubbish it was. It always features in these 'best of' lists, despite being pretty poor. It's not realistic and its not fantastical. It imitates the intellectual jink you get in films like 'Usual Suspects' or 'Barton Fink', without actually asking the audience to do the hard work involved. It's like a clever film for people who aren't clever, and a prison film for people who want to play with the idea of incarceration, but don't want to think about what real abuse is like.
I probably wouldn't speak so harshly of it, if it didn't feature so heavily on these lists.
It would be amusing if it started coming in at the top of all the other polls though.
