Disability in drama

In Deadwood the disabled character Jewel is played by a disabled actor I believe. I think realistic casting of disability is a good thing; it increases the work available to disabled actors, and makes it more realistic. You see a few Downs syndrome actors these days.

Last night on BBC2 there was a crime drama ('Soundproof' I think) with two deaf characters played by deaf actors. I don't believe able bodied actors would have filled these roles in such a convincing way. Also the plot depended on the deaf guy being very sexy, hence seducing the sign interpreter at the police station, and he was.

What do you think? Any good depictions of disability you can think of - and were the actors themselves disabled?

I see Gove has backed down on climate change and it's back in the curriculum again.
