11:20 am - Deadwood
I continue to watch Deadwood

Wild Bill did get killed this episode. I thought he might be around for a lot longer than that. I really liked him. I was very sad.

I strongly recommend this series to anyone who hasn't seen it yet. I think it's good enough to justify buying the first season on DVD, sight unseen, if you don't mind sex, violence and ultra-swearing. Strong characters wrestling with moral and psychological issues in a lawless society - what could be better. I admire the versatility and force of the writing.

I hope it is maintained at this quality.

Comment contains spoiler for same episode

But that closing scene is wonderful, isn't it, when you hear the strumming on the soundtrack, and people start emerging into the street to find out what's happened, and the only two lines of dialogue are Jane asking the man what it is and him telling her... That's good use of music in drama, building up mood rather than drowning the action and dialogue.

And the thing I was going to mention the other day but kept back until you got this far is that historically Bill was killed the day after Sol and Seth arrived in Deadwood, so they didn't really have time to become friends.

Yes, without doubt it was a brilliantly created scene. If we lose a character we like, we want the show to do it justice, and I felt that. I didn't feel cheated, but I did feel bereft.

Oh, and the head that appears in that scene... Remember the head.

Other thoughts just occurred -

I didn't realise Sol and Seth were historical characters.

I am not hugely sensitive to music but I did notice how good it was in that last scene, and the direction. Not sure who directed this episode?

Alan Taylor, and it was written by Elizabeth Sarnoff, according to the site (that page should be safe to look at, it's for that episode).

Yes, Star and Bullock really were pioneering shopkeepers, apparently. I did read a list of which characters were historical and which fictional, but I can't find it quickly. I think Al and Trixie are real, but Alma isn't.

I'm glad you like it.

In my opinion, it just keeps getting better :)

I'm glad, even though I have to manage without Wild Bill.

BTW I just did one of those lj search listings (interest=deadwood) and you were more or less at the top of the list. I decided not to subscribe to any of the communities, for fear of spoilers.

Cool! Must've been random, though - I did that search and wasn't anywhere to be seen.

I bought the S1 DVDs just the other week because they were at £24.99 in a sale someplace and I'd heard such good things about it. I watched the whole season in a single weekend (!) with some friends who'd seen the season before but wanted to get a second look. It was brilliant. What struck me most was its authenticity - the writing, the performances, the design, all conspire to immerse you in the show's world. You believe in Deadwood. It makes sense to you. And that, I think, makes it a show less viewed than experienced. [/wank]

I have more in-depth thoughts, but I'll wait until you've finished the season. ;) What channel are you watching it on, by the way?

sky three, which is free. Authenticity - yes - I was thinking exactly that.

And, though I hesitate to hype shows for fear that they won't live up to artificial expectations, it really does get more authentic, by which I mean ever more complex and, well, real.

Great show. I'm going to watch Season Two as soon as possible. :P

Hi! I see you like Deadwood. Would you like the OST? I was given another copy as a present and don't need two. :) It's just a second hand one. Email me (tehomet at gmail dot com) if you like.

Hi tehomet. I will email you, but wanted to say thanks here too. However I am so ignorant that i don't know what an OST is.
