beyond belief

I watched last night's drama about the Moors Murders (concluded tonight). I was impressed by it.

This all happened when I was a little kid. Most of the drama was set in the stiflingly dull cramped living spaces of the early sixties, very familiar from my childhood. There was one short scene of horror - not the greatest horror, 'only' the killing of an adult - which almost seemed like a flash of unreality, something impossible to integrate with the rest. And afterwards as the police find it hard to believe and the characters wonder if they just dreamed it, yes - that is authentic, that's how it felt.

And that's how violence feels in society I think, and how it feels in life - something that happens in a different world, that it's difficult to integrate with the rest of life.
