Looking two ways

Happy 2006 to all. Here is a Guardian quiz of key events of 2005 (anglocentric). I got 30/50.

What do I expect in 2006? I hope to improve my health after two bad years (late 2003 to mid 2005) in which I had my appendix out and had a hysterectomy. I want to go back to exercising like I used to. I am hoping that the British economy doesn't go completely to hell. I'll count myself lucky if I still have a job this time next year.

What I hope for is to get my hypnotherapy qualification, maybe finish my translation of the Dao De Jing. Maybe recover my ability to read and write which have been badly damaged by my poor health.

temeres very expertly performs that trick of mapping the development of life on Earth onto a single year. Eukaryotes appear in June, the Dinosaurs get wiped out on Christmas day (sad) and you were born less than a second before midnight.

Meanwhile James Lovelock (Gaia man) compares us to the people in the 1930s who knew a great global war was coming, but didn't know how to stop it.

Serious climate change is now inevitable, whatever we do: by the middle of the century, he says, the Arctic icecap will have gone; by the end of it, the rain forests will have disappeared too, to be replaced by desolation. The Earth's temperature will have risen by 8C, as it has before, and it will probably stay there for another 200,000 years.

"We are part of it (the system), we can never consider ourselves as something separate. To think we could be its stewards is grotesque. We will be struggling against it. We've got to make peace while we're still strong enough to make terms, and not just a rabble. I see Kyoto as like Munich. It's an attempt to buy time before the real struggle starts."

  • Phew what a scorcher

I see Gove has backed down on climate change and it's back in the curriculum again.

At the moment I have set up this journal so that only friends can comment. I hate doing this, but I was just getting too much Russian spam.
