List five things that get you excited/happy/enthusiastic about life, in no real order, and tag 5 folks to do it.
WB Yeats wrote a poem (Vacillation) about this.
My fiftieth year had come and gone,
I sat, a solitary man,
In a crowded London shop,
An open book and empty cup
On the marble table-top.
While on the shop and street I gazed
My body of a sudden blazed;
And twenty minutes more or less
It seemed, so great my happiness,
That I was blessed and could bless.
1 - Yeats might have meant that bliss comes unnannounced but from my experience reading in a coffee shop and gazing around is virtually a recipe for it.
2 - The cinema pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-papapa: an hour from now you'll wish you'd had one. Is the best bit when the film starts, and you anticipate how great it's going to be? Or the crash like a wave breaking when you realise - yes, this is one of the good ones? Fabulous sensation, like immersion in a dream.
3 - When I read back my writing to myself and the idea of what I wanted to say is still so fresh in my mind that it seems to be still shining through the words. And then - sigh - one comes back to it later and the words are just a husk. Still, it's nice while it lasts.
4 - Laughing with a friend. Which is better - to laugh or to be made to laugh? Both at once I think.
5 - Walking through trees, with the sun shining down through them. A bit like that sequence in 'Wind in the Willows' when mole encounters Pan.
I seem to have run out of time without mentioning sex, books and music which are all incomparably sweet.
ETA - tagging others. I was happy to be tagged but I am too shy to tag anyone else. If you are so similarly shy that you want to do this but won't without me mentioning you by name, be assured that I am silently tagging you :-)
