breaking bad

Probably my last ever AV post

I was going to post on AV again, but Charlie Brooker has said what I wanted to say in a more elegant way ('The stupidity whirlpool').
Political ads have rarely been subtle in the past, but this current slew could insult the intelligence of a silverfish. It's not so much that they think we're stupid, but that their attempts to appeal to that perceived stupidity are so stupid in themselves; they've created a sort of self-perpetuating stupidity whirlpool.
One influence on my opinion to date has been the insulting behaviour of the 'Yes' campaigners - both personally insulting and insulting my intelligence with strawman arguments. But now the 'No' campaign have started insulting my intelligence as well. I am being insulted by the people I was inclined to vote for!

At the weekend we had a large family get-together. There is disagreement amongst us on the AV issue, and it was good to hear respectful and measured discussion. Furthermore, after a lot of essays which in my opinion were biased and dishonest, nwhyte has linked to this article on the pros and cons of AV from the Political Studies Association, which is also respectful and measured. There's no swearing at anyone, no 'it's simple', no 'only an ignorant bitch could fail to agree with me' or anything like that.

Anyway, despite having found some intellectual high ground I am coming round to the idea of abstaining, because either result will be presented as some kind of gutter endorsement by horrible people who I do not want to be associated with.

Rattle bag

I have had a lovely week. On Friday I went for a long cycle with H round Rutland Water, which was good time together. The weather was perfect - not too hot, but sunny - and there's a nice pub half way round, and there were bluebells everywhere. I loved it.

On Saturday I was preparing food all day- my daughter made H Nigella's Chocolate Guinness Cake which was great. I recommend this as an easy and delish cake. Nigella is so camp it's hilarious:
This cake is magnificent in its damp blackness... a resonant, ferrous tang ... I've eaten versions ... stuffed and slathered in a rich chocolate icing, I think that can take away from its dark majesty.
Whatevs.

Then on Sunday, big family get-together which was lovely. I think I can't completely relax and chat to people when I'm rushing about making sure people have enough to eat and drink, but it was smashing to see them all. My sister's boyf gave H a double bass. Jeepers it's a massive instrument. I'm saying to H 'If you ever wonder whether I am a tolerant and laid-back partner, take a look at that bloody thing in our living room.' Seriously, it's a lot bigger than a full size Dalek. Whether he'll add it to his performance repertoire I am not sure.

On a slight downer - I think our neighbours who are feeding Milo real chicken and tuna have alienated his affections from us. I am not going to enter into some kind of meat-quality arms race to win him back, so I am sticking to (reasonably good) commercial cat food at our end. If he wants to spend most of his time there, I will let him go. He also seems to be limping badly at the moment, so it may be that he is entering some kind of old age decline. Sad, but the natural processes of time.
