breaking bad

Silence in the Library

An excellent episode of Doctor Who last night. Most posts I have seen have been about the scenes in the Library with The Doctor. But I'm particularly interested in the sub-plot about the little girl who goes into the dreamland. This is the sort of story I like a lot.

'When I close my eyes I'm in the library'.

The idea that you can simply decode dreams using lists of correspondences is very silly, I know, but I think there are a few rules of thumb about the meaning of dreams. I generally think a house is the Self, and the rooms parts of the Self. A more rare but loosely recurrent dream image for me is the Library. Sometimes I dream that every night I go to the Library, and everyone on Earth is there. I think this is an image of the collective unconscious (whether it exists or not). It has with it the feeling of massive potential.

I seem to remember I have heard other people mention the Library Dream. I bet Steven Moffat has had it too. But perhaps I'm projecting - anyone else had this dream?

H has just left to spend the day in a recording studio. I am not going to sit here spending my life online. No.

But just one more post.

PS from Borges 'Library of Babel': "Perhaps my old age and fearfulness deceive me, but I suspect that the human species — the unique species — is about to be extinguished, but the Library will endure: illuminated, solitary, infinite, perfectly motionless, equipped with precious volumes, useless, incorruptible, secret."
