The Wire: season 2

I am half way through season 2 of The Wire. This show is so good. I recommend it to anyone who likes the sort of thing I like. I think it is slightly slow to get going, in that while there are lots of charismatic characters, they only reveal their full potential over several episodes. So if you decide to give it a go, watch a few before you make up your mind. It is fantastic.

(ETA - though as executrix says in comments, set in a circle of hell)

I've never seen a show with such a diverse range of interesting black characters. Season 2 introduces the white working class too. I'd probably like to see a greater range of female characters, though the women who are shown are fully rounded human beings, like the men. But overall - there's barely a character who isn't 3-dimensional, engaging, and unique. The actors must have absolutely loved working on this.

I think the sexiest character is Russell 'Stringer' Bell. This is at least partly, for me, because he is Jayne-sized. I can't really find a good picture of him. But it's mainly his manner anyway. Here he is looking corporate. If you are a 'Wire' watcher, who do you fancy most?

I can not imagine why this show hasn't been shown on mainstream TV in this country.

Great is Diana of the Ephesians

A pagan prayer for Samhain, courtesy of Ron Mael

Never turn your back on Mother Earth
When she's on her best behaviour
Don't be tempted by her favours
Never turn your back on mother earth
Towns are hurled from A to B
By hands that looked so smooth to me
Never turn your back on mother earth
Grasp at straws that don't want grasping
Gaze at clouds that come down crashing
Never turn your back on mother earth
I'll admit I was unfaithful
But from now I'll be more faithful
Never turn your back on mother earth

Tyndale Bible: Acts 19, verse 34 'there arose a shout almost for the space of two hours of all men crying, great is Diana of the Ephesians.'
