breaking bad

hunting bambi

A firm in the US arranges days out for men to hunt down naked women with paintball guns. It's called 'Hunting Bambi'. The women don't wear any protective gear. As one of the participating men puts it:

I don't go deer hunting and see a deer with a football helmet on so I don't want to see one on a girl either.

Like the teenage behaviour modification camp I wrote about a couple of weeks ago, it is so clear to me that this is wrong, that I hardly know where to start. This discussion thread presents a range of responses.

For balance here is a livejournal discussion with a man who presents an alternative view in a sane and reasonable way (though I don't agree with his conclusions)

I think the key here is that the strong (parents, soldiers, rich men) never have the right to obliterate the humanity of the weak (children, poor women, prisoners etc.). I'm not going to explain what I mean by 'obliterating someone's humanity'.

Is it (and this is a genuine question) that these people don't respect and recognise themselves as human beings? I think perhaps because they don't value their own humanity, they can't value it in other people.

The other possibility that occurs to me is that they classify large sections of our species as 'not human'. They think of women, children, etc. as 'clever animals' rather than as 'men'. I sometimes think the word 'bitch' is used by (some) men in this way. They are identifying a woman as a female animal, in contradistinction to themselves as human beings, somehow separate from the animals, and at liberty to hunt or degrade them.
