Atrios posts a letter from a Vermont newspaper. A mother writes.
You have the audacity to talk about protecting families and children from the homosexual menace, while you yourselves tear apart families and drive children to despair. I don't know why my son is gay, but I do know that God didn't put him, and millions like him, on this Earth to give you someone to abuse. God gave you brains so that you could think, and it's about time you started doing that.... If you want to tout your own morality, you'd best come up with something more substantive than your heterosexuality. You did nothing to earn it... The deep-thinking author of a letter to the April 12 Valley News who lectures about homosexual sin and tells us about "those of us who have been blessed with the benefits of a religious upbringing" asks: "What ever happened to the idea of striving...to be better human beings than we are?" Indeed, sir, what ever happened to that?
The whole thing is very powerful. The comments to the post are good too.
A second story is from Afghanistan.
"She was patient, but it was too much for her. She was educated and sensitive. She found it hard to live like a slave."
A government mission sent to investigate the problem in Herat, the biggest city in the country's west, reported that at least 52 young, married, or soon-to-be married women had burned themselves to death in the city in recent months. The youngest was a 13-year-old bride-to-be.
"There is not a village in Farah where a young woman has not burned herself to death,"
In the past, every girl knew she belonged to her family, she existed only for her father and her husband: she knew she wasn't free. Now, young girls know they should have rights, and they are prepared to burn themselves to show society that they do not have them yet.
"She just wanted to be free and this was her only way."
A picture here which you may or may not want to see.
