12:29 pm - The Heat Death of Universal Education
Ah, it's easy to mock. Michael Gove complains that the young people don't learn nothin' at school. Not like in his day. Why, nowadays young people don't even learn Newton's Laws of Thermodynamics!

But luckily once all the schools are 'free' - i.e. answering entirely to his every whim - he can ruddy well order them to teach those Newtonian laws. And while he's at it, how about teaching them how gravity was invented when Rudolf Clausius was hit on the head by an apple?

(ETA To be fair, I guess 'cooling' is one aspect of thermodynamics.)

I think he may be haunted by that ghost of Physics Past for some time to come.

Yes, it was a silly mistake really, and I guess anyone could have said it, but it's particularly unfortunate when he is lecturing us about how ignorant young people are. And I never pass up the opportunity to give Gove a kicking.

But if I don't laugh, I might have to cry.

Not that my grasp of physics is the best in the world. But then I'm not the one who's job it is to set forth an "education" "policy". (Quotes used because I fail to see how this resembles either of those concepts.)

What's really bad in that speech is that he says successful headmaster should establish 'a brand' and 'set up chains' (I assume he means chains of franchised primary schools to a common brand identity).

I have no words to express precisely how chillingly repellent I find that.
