05:23 pm - Pointless
I do recommend the BBC2 quiz show Pointless which is on from 4.30-5.15 every weekday. It's just so amiable and fun. I think Alexander Armstrong is a great host, and Richard Osman is the natural heir to Richard 'Twice Nightly' Whiteley.

H says that part of the reason Pointless is so good is that to watch it at 4.30 on a weekday you need to have bunked off work early, which gives it an extra frisson. Actually, I doubt H has ever said 'frisson' in his life, but something along those lines.

A couple of weeks ago I was looking after my mum's cat (again). I was on my own - I'd been sitting quietly working at my computer - and I put on Pointless, and after a while I realised the cat was standing looking at me in amazement. As far as the cat was concerned I had gone mad - one minute sitting quietly and sensibly like a cat, the next minute laughing and calling out like the monkey he always suspected I was.

If H does use 'frisson', I doubt that it's in italics, anyway, even mentally.

I suspect you may be right about your mum's cat: in one sense, we must be a repeated disappointment to them, but actually, it just confirms what they always really thought. Superiority maintained!

I think he likes coming to stay with us, because we are a bit more lively than my mum and dad. My mum says 'he just sleeps all the time' but when he's with us he goes racing round. I think he sleeps at their house because they are quite boring :-)

Pointless is so, so brilliant. I LOVE Richard. My Mum loves Alexander, despite me telling her he's my age. Ah well.

Alexander is definitely a lady-pleaser, although he's a spokesman for the Countryside Alliance, of all ghastly things. Did you see yesterday when he was introducing the old lady who was a taxi driver: 'Do you go south of the river?' slight pause 'That's not a euphemism.'

I had NO IDEA he was in favour of the Countryside Alliance. There's plenty of them up there in rural Northumberland (where he's from). They all come into Newcastle and shop at Fenwick's. I'll tell my Mum.

However, when he comes out with jokes like that on daytime TV, I have to love him quite a lot.
