05:22 pm - Sherlock Speculation
Will this week's episode of Sherlock introduce Moriarty? If so, who do you think will play him (or her)? An existing minor character, such as the pathologist woman? Or the hospital guy who introduced them at the start?

Speaking personally I would like it to be someone not yet introduced, and someone who will impress or surprise on first sight. Who do we have in Moffat's circle of preferred actors? Simon Pegg? The Director of the final episode also directed Gangster No 1, so perhaps Thewlis or Bettany - too grown up and expensive perhaps.

Or do you think he might not be seen at all?

Yes, I can see that. It would be just enough of a change. Do you think it will be someone we have already seen?

It seems unlikely that they'd do a 21st-century update of a canon in which Mrs Hudson is the only recurring female character without at least one gender-change. There'd be too much fuss if it were Sherlock; you might just get away with Jane Watson, but it would throw the dynamics, even if you think they're homo-erotic; Lestrade has been done as a woman already. So, although Moriarty is not exactly a regular character in the original, if you're running "Who is Moriarty?" as your overall plot-arc, it makes sense to cast a woman. Holmes has already made one slip on gender, when (reasonably enough) he assumed Harry Watson was a man, and the cabbie told him: "There's others out there just like you, except you're just a man..."

As for who: the way the credits were arranged (regulars first, the rest in order of appearance) plus the characters featured on the BBC website suggest that one of the women we have seen is going to be far more important than she appeared in the first episode. Either they're going to give her some other significant role (Watson's love interest?) or she's Moriarty.

I assumed the pathologist woman might end up as Watson's love interest, given that the name Molly is a pet form for Mary. The name Molly has had a resurgence in popularity but Mary hasn't, so it can be seen as part of an update.

I'd like Moriarty to be a her. Possibly Anthea, Mycroft's assistant, busy with her phone whenever we saw her.

She's also got her own blog, along with Sherlock and John.

Based on some of the phrasing used last week, my wife speculated that Moriarty may not be a person but an organisation.

That is the other possibility I think, with Molly as perhaps its agent

Note to self: Read all comments carefully before replying.

Katlinel obviously had the same thought, AND she could remember the names...

Probably because I only got round to watching it on Weds so have had less time to forget the names! I am sure that isn't her real name - it's just the name she gave to Watson.

But hey, we had the same thought!

Yes, great minds obviously think alike. It's that or 'Moriarty' is an organisation and she is its agent.
